My Choice 576 – Josef Strauss: Dragonfly Polka-Mazurka

Die Libelle (The Dragonfly) Polka-Mazurka op. 204 composed by Josef Strauss in 1866. We’re showing a few photos of dragonflies and lakes/rivers where they may be found. A dragonfly is a type of insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies are similar to damselflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most dragonflies are held away from, and perpendicular to, the body when at rest. Even though dragonflies possess 6 legs (like any other insect), they are not capable of walking. Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as “nymphs”, are aquatic. Dragonfly – National Park Animals for Kids

The dragonfly has incredible flying ability. It can fly forward, backward, and can even hover as it searches out and captures prey. Adding to the efficiency of this predator are its eyes, which have over 30000 lens per eye that allow for precise targeting of its insect prey. Dragonflies are one of 150species explored in Finley-Holiday’s “National Park Animals for Kids DVD.” Filmed entirely in the national parks by renown nature videographer Russ Finley, the DVD explores 6 classes of animals: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, insects and spiders (aka bugs) in over 2 hours of video.
