Dragonfly Feeding Swarm at Lakeside Lake
This video by Christine Goforth of the University of Arizona depicts a dragonfly feeding swarm in Tucson, AZ, who writes, “Dragonflies are known to fly en masse in mixed swarms while feeding on other insects. The dragonflies shown here are eating insects emerging from the recently watered grass, including ants and termites. The swarm is made up of a mixture of strong fliers, including Pantala flavescens, P. hymenaea, Tramea lacerata, and T. onusta and was present at the park where this was filmed for over a week.”

Dragonfly Safari
This video features some of the first dragonflies I’ve identified. You can view the Widow Skimmer, Twelve-spotted Skimmer, Common Whitetail, Dot-tailed Whiteface, White-faced Meadowhawk, Cherry-faced Meadowhawk (mentioned as some sort of amber-winged Meadowhawk in the video) and the Common Pondhawk. I mention a possible Ruby Meadowhawk, but it was a likely male Cherry-faced Meadowhawk. I have not yet gotten an expert opinion on it. I hope to get more species and better video in the months ahead. The video was shot at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center and along the Cedar River in Austin, MN in July of 2010.
